This is a little survey that I originally did for a linguistics class I took in college. The results were pretty interesting so I've decided to do it again just for fun. This time I'd like to get a lot more responses from a wider geographical area. If you're interested, please take a moment to help me out.

The survey is designed to investigate dialect boundaries in the United States. In other words, I'm trying to determine what words people use for things in different areas of the country. You're probably aware that some people in the U.S. say 'soda' and some say 'pop', but where are the boundaries between 'soda' and 'pop'? That's what I would like you to help me find out.

On the next page you will be asked for some information about yourself. Most important is the location, consisting of city, state, and zip code. This location should be the one that shaped the way you speak. In most cases, this will be the place where you grew up. However, if you have moved and have absorbed the dialect of your new location, you should supply that new location instead. It is VERY IMPORTANT that the words and the location match up.

After that, you will be asked several questions about the words you use. Simply choose the ones you use, or supply them in the 'other' boxes if necessary. That's all there is to it.

Finally, I would like to ask that you not put fake data in. I'm just going to go in and remove anything that looks false (for example, if the city, state, and zip don't match or there are profanities in your responses). Putting fake data in is just a waste of time for me and you, so don't do it. Thanks.

Do you understand the instructions and want to take the survey?
